Harrel, Incorporated -- the Hi-Tech Extrusion Systems Company

REVOLUTIONARY ALTERNATE POLYMER TUBING EXTRUSION SYSTEM STARTS WITH POLYMER "A", CHANGES SEAMLESSLY TO POLYMER "B", AND BACK AGAIN.

WHY ALTERNATE POLYMER?

Many tubing applications need different characteristics for the tube at one end from those at the other end. A typical example is a catheter, where a stiff shank is required to get the catheter to the correct location, but once it gets there, a soft tip is required, to keep from damaging sensitive tissue.

The conventional way of accomplishing this is to extrude two different tubes -- one from relatively stiff material, and the other from very soft material -- and then weld the two tubes together.

This is quite an expensive way to make tubing. It requires two separate extrusion operations -- to make the two different tubes -- and then a welding operation to join the two together

The welding, in particular, is very critical. There can be not the slightest irregularity, or change in the diameter of the tubing. For a change in inner diameter at the weld may cause the material inside the tube to hang up on the rough portion. And it can have no change in outer diameter, without posing the possibility of damaging sensitive tissue. Even more dangerous is a failure of the weld. This can have truly disastrous consequences for the patient!.

All in all, this traditional way of making tubing with different characteristics at the two ends is most unsatisfactory. Its only saving grace is that has been the only practical way up to now to make the tubing.

ENTER HARREL'S ALTERNATE POLYMER SYSTEM!

Until now! With Harrel's ALTERNATE POLYMER system the tubing starts out with polymer "A" and changes seamlessly to polymer "B" and then back again. The whole complex tube is made in one simple operation, controlled by a patented system using precision melt pumps with highly accurate servo drives. .

In most companies, ALTERNATE POLYMER can eliminate an entire department. That means really important cost savings. Further, the tubing will be of far higher quality. There is no weld joint to leak or come loose -- just a smooth tube that changes from one polymer to the other and then back again.

Harrel's ALTERNATE POLYMER systems are very versatile, too. Do you need "bump" tubing? No problem. "double bump"? Of course. "Triple bump"? Definitely. Fluoropolymers? Sure. Corrugated tubing? Yep. And multi-lumen tubing, which is not practical with welded tubing, is quite straightforward with ALTERNATE POLYMER!

ALTERNATE POLYMER is really a very elegant system!
