1/4 DIN Temperature Controllers for really precise control of temperature.
Multizone temperature controllers, such as the Harrel CP-641, CP-642, CP-643, and CP-873 DIGIPANEL controllers, in general offer a more economical and versatile solution than discrete controllers for the control of temperature on complex machines, such as extruders and extruder accessories. The CP-641, for example, offers 8 heating and cooling and 8 heating only zones, all with full PID control, for less than $200 per zone. Click on multizone controllers to check these out.
For many retrofit applications, or where operators are accustomed to discrete controllers, however, the Harrel TC-800 series 1/4 DIN plug-in temperature controllers are an excellent solution.
In 1967, Harrel, Incorporated introduced to the plastics industry the very first three mode (PID) temperature controllers suitable for such applications as deep well sensing in extruder barrels. These pioneering controllers have been continually improved since then by the addition of such functions as:
- DUOSENSE(R): The cascade deep-and-shallow well temperature control system for barrel control, which Harrel patented in the 80's. Overall control is from a deep well, down near the plastic, where it counts. Fast response to external environmental influences, such as line voltage, ambient temperature, and cooling water temperatures, come from the cascaded shallow well control loop.
- A SPECIAL, PATENTED, RATE CONTROL LOOP, which greatly reduces temperature overshoots.
- DEVIATION ALARMS -- to monitor performance continuously.
- OPEN AND SHORTED SENSOR PROTECTION
The TC-810 (Heating only) and TC-812 (Heating and Cooling) Single Zone Controller
- HEATING ONLY, OR HEATING AND COOLING.
- FULL 3-MODE (PID) CONTROL, with separate trim adjustments on the heating and the cooling sides, for best performance. Using the same trims on both sides inevitably involves a compromise in performance.
- Patented Harrel rate control system greatly reduces temperature overshoots.
- PLUG-IN CONSTRUCTION for easy maintenance.

- STANDARD OUTPUT is an open collector d-c output, capable of generating a 10 volt d-c time proportional control signal across a 1000 ohm resistance. Plugging a PM-102 power module into the controller case converts the output to 1 ampere at 115 volts, capable of operating up to a size 1 external contactor, a solenoid valve, or a mercury relay. Using the companion PL-100 or PL-200 panel mounted plug in power modules gives up to 30 amperes at either 115 or 230 volts.

THE TC-825 (HEATING ONLY) AND TC-827 (HEATING AND COOLING) DUOSENSE TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER
- Harrel developed and patented the first deep-and-shallow well cascade temperature controller for use on extruder barrel
temperature control.
- Overall control is from a deep well, down near the plastic, where it counts!
- Second loop operates from shallow well and gives fast response to external changes -- line voltage, ambient temperature, cooling water temperature (if used), etc.
- Full 3-mode (PID) control, with separate trim adjustments for heating and for cooling sides for best performance. Using the same trim values for both heating and cooling requires compromises in performance.
- Patented rate control system greatly reduces temperature overshoots.
- RTD sensing for best performance.

TC-820 DUAL ZONE CONTROLLER

- Ideal for general purpose use, or for downstream applications on extrusion lines, for such applications as die temperature control, flanges, adapters, melt pumps, etc.

Plugging a PM-102 solid state power module into the controller case, converts the output to a fully isolated, 1 ampere solid state output, capable of operating up to a size 1 contactor, a solenoid valve, or a mercury relay. For higher power outputs, two PL series plug-in power modules make a very elegant and convenient panel. Alternatively, standard cabinet mounted PMseries solid state power modules may be used for power outputs up to 100 Kw.
