There is another, even more important consideration -- you'll get a far more meaningful result from the VISCOTRUDER you have created. The trouble with melt indexers and most viscosity measuring instruments is that they usually do not make their measurements in the ranges of temperature, pressure, and shear that you encounter in a real-world extrusion or injection machine application.

Well, what better way is there to ensure that your measurements are in fact representative of conditions you will encounter in real extrusion or injection molding than to make your measurements using an actual extruder?

The way this is accomplished is simplicity itself. You simply add a Harrel VI-600 viscosity conversion kit to your TIGER series GEARTRUDER. The VI-600 consists of the following:

• A specially designed die, with a special slit designed to minimize end effects.
• Two specially calibrated and linearized pressure sensors.
• A plug-in card for the DIGIPANEL on the GEARTRUDER, which contains the software for running the tests and interpreting the results.

That's all there is to it! You have converted your TIGER series GEARTRUDER into a VT-600 VISCONTRUDER, using the patented Harrel VISCONTROL system. Quite obviously all the results will be applicable to conditions on an active extrusion line or injection molding machine, for they are taken on an actual, operating extruder!

The VT-600 VISCOTRUDER you have created is a great deal more convenient to use than the conventional melt indexer or viscosimeter. For those devices would require the operator to take one measurement at a time,. whereas the VISCOTRUDER can make use of a Harrel CP-603 SQC monitor to automate the process and display the results on a 14" full color display.

Using the CP-603 it is possible to:

• Print out the apparent viscosity vs shear for the entire range covered by the run.
• Analyze the data and do a curve fit to find the best approximation. It then calculates and prints out the power law index of the polymer.
